Joining Forces for a Carbon-Negative Built Environment
Today marks a major milestone for European building material innovation. The EIC Cement and Concrete Portfolio, established under the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Challenge “Towards cement and concrete as a carbon sink”, has officially launched its joint website and press release.
The online platform – eic-carbonsink.eu – brings together six breakthrough EU-funded research initiatives working collaboratively to transform cement and concrete from major sources of global carbon emissions into carbon-negative assets for Europe’s built environment.
Six Sister Projects, One Shared Mission
The portfolio unites six pioneering projects across Europe:
By combining complementary technological approaches, the portfolio tackles cement decarbonisation from every angle. Joint research across the six projects focuses on four key areas:
-
Alternative Binders & Processes: Developing low-carbon, novel chemistry routes (including room-temperature mechanochemical and tribochemical synthesis).
-
Clinker Reduction: Maximising binder efficiency and promoting circular material reuse.
-
Energy & Emission Reductions: Cutting thermal energy requirements and eliminating direct process emissions.
-
Enabling Technologies: Deploying advanced computational tools, artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge characterisation tools.
